The Hare and the Tortoise

hare-and-tortoiseThe Tortoise, the Hare, and the Squirrel were all friends. The Hare was very proud of his speed and often made fun of the Tortoise who was slow. One day the Hare was teasing the Tortoise. “Hare, that was very rude. You don’t say mean things to your friend,” said the Squirrel to the Hare. “I am sorry, but I am fast and Tortoise is slow. Lets have a race to prove my point”, replied the Hare. “Yes, let’s race from here to the lake and back. It’s a long way and will take us a long time so let start early in the morning. The one who completes the race first is the winner”, said the Tortoise.

hare-and-tortoiseThe next morning, just as the Sun was coming up, the Hare and the Tortoise got ready for the race. “3,2,1 and GO” said the Squirrel. The Hare zoomed past and was soon out of sight. The Tortoise was indeed slow. The Hare ran past the birds on the trees and the Bumblebee on the flowers and the Grasshopper on the grass. He ran past the Toad sitting on the Toadstool.

It was noon by the time the Hare reached the lake. He nibbled on the grass and carrots that grew by the lake. He drank some water. The Hare was tired after the long run and decided to rest under the shade of the tree. “The Tortoise will take a long time. I can take some rest and may be even a small nap. I will still win the race because the Tortoise is so slow”, thought the Hare. And soon the Hare was fast asleep.

hare-and-tortoiseThe Tortoise was making his way slowly and steadily. He passed the birds on the trees, the Bumblebee on the flowers and the Grasshopper on the grass. He ran past the Toad sitting on the Toadstool and was at the lake. He drank some water and started back. He saw the Hare sleeping under the tree. The Tortoise was tired too. “I must complete my task before I take rest. I must finish the race and then I can sleep”, said the Tortoise and continued on his way. After a long time the Tortoise reached the end line.

The Hare was still sleeping under the tree. He woke up with  a start. The sun was all red, ready to set. The Tortoise was nowhere in sight. “I slept too much. If I run fast enough I can still win this race.” And the Hare ran as fast as his legs could carry.

hare-and-tortoiseHe hurried past the Toad sitting on the Toadstool. “Did you see the Tortoise go this way?” asked the Hare to the Toad. “Run fast, the Tortoise went by this way long ago”, replied the Toad.

The Hare ran past the Grasshopper on the grass. ”Did you see the Tortoise go this way?” asked the Hare to the Grasshopper. “Run fast, the Tortoise went by this way long ago”, replied the Grasshopper.

The Hare ran past the Bumblebee on the flowers. ”Did you see the Tortoise go this way?” asked the Hare to the Bumblebee. “Run fast, the Tortoise went by this way long ago”, replied the Bumblebee.

The Hare reached the end line and saw the Squirrel. “Did you see the Tortoise?” asked the Hare. “The Tortoise finished the race long ago. He was hungry and tired and went home to eat and sleep. The Tortoise was first and he won the race.”
