I Hate Luv Storys

Psychic Dee - I Hate Luv StorysI Hate Luv Storys - Dee gives this movie a thumbs up.

Ideally this Karan Johar movie has everything going for it. A young peppy cast, upbeat music, slick production and a big banner. Newbie director Punit Malhotra's story, about an assistant director Veer and production designer Simran who work for the most romantic filmmaker (a la Karan Johar) of Indian Film Industry, seems like a cliche. Jay hates luv stories and Simran loves luv stories! Does this story need any more explanation??? Story will be the weak point of this movie, but I wouldn't write off this movie yet. On the positive side, the pairing of Imran Khan & Sonam Kapoor is gorgeous. Imran Khan is suited for this kind of roles. Action flicks don't suit him which is proven by his last 2 duds. Sonam Kapoor has yet to prove her mettle but the casting comes like a breath of fresh air.

The young dynamic duo of Vishal- Shekhar once again churn out a peppy album. The title song "I Hate Luv Storys" is definitely very catchy, not to forget "Bahara" & "Sadka".

If for nothing else I would like to see this movie just to see how the story, with all its references to some of the most romantic flicks of our times, turns out. If you are the mushy romantic type who doesn't mind the occasional mismash and would love to see a romantic chick flick, go out and have fun, I know I will!

Rajneeti

rajneetiRajneeti is Prakahs Jha’s adaptation of my favorite epic Mahabharat in the setting of modern day regional politics.
Character Similarities: Rashtrawadi Party is the modern day Hastinapur. Bharati (Nikhila Trikha) plays Kunthi, the mother of Pandavas-the second in line to succeed the chairperson of Rashtrawadi Party. Her two legitimate sons are Prithvi Pratap Singh played by Arjun Rampal and Samar Pratap Singh played by Ranbir Kapoor. Prithvi is the oldest and is mighty Bheem. Samar is the savvy, clever and shrewd Arjun. Brij Mohan played by Nana Patekar is Krishna, the real king maker. Chander Pratap the husband of Bharati, depicts Pandu. Bhanu Pratap the older brother of Chander Pratap is a mix of Bhishma and Dhritarashtra. He suffers from stroke and is paralysed for most part of the film just like Bhishma was on his bed of arrows for most part of the war of Kurukshetra.  Veerendra Pratap played by Manoj Bajpai is Duryodhana. Veerendra Pratap is the son of Bhanu Pratap and considers himself the heir apparent  after his father. Sooraj Kumar played by Ajay Devgan portrays Karna. He is the illegitimate child of Bharati and is brought up by the driver of the Pratap family portraying the modern day charioteer Adhiraath. Katrina Kaif as Indu portrays Draupadi; a pawn in the political drama. She loves Samar but ends up marrying Prithvi.
The adaptation has some shades of Godfather’s hot headed womanising Sonny in Prithvi and calculating and shrewd Michael in Samar. Sarah played by Sarah Thompson (she had appeared in 7th Heaven) has similarities with Kay Adams, girlfriend of Michael Corleone.

Costumes: Clothes make the characters. I loved the styling of Ranbir Kapoor. His looks with jeans, T-shirt and a nehru collared short unbuttoned jacket gave him the right mixture of political involvement, a degree of aloofness and casual styling. His glasses gave him an amount of serious intellectual look. I loved Arjun Rampal’s clothes too. His neta dress was stylish and yet portrayed his consummate political ambitions. I loved the colors of his duppattas, who knew khakhi duppatta would go so well with white!!! Manoj Bajpai’s stuffy formal clothes were perfect for the portrayal of Duryodhana. Sooraj’s costumes brought out his down to earth, peasant upbringing. The golden earrings were a nice touch to make the connections to Karna (read here about Karna and his earrings) as was his name Sooraj meaning Sun. Karna’s father was Sun god.
I was disappointed with the ladies costumes. I liked Katrina’s saree at the rally and the nice touch with the pallu over head. However, her saree when she is sworn in as CM was a poor choice. It made her look more like an air hostess than a woman CM. They should have looked at Indira Gandhi ’s sarees or Sonia Gandhi’s sarees for inspiration.
Similarly Bharati’s choice of sarees were below par. A good source of inspiration could have come from Sheila Dixit or Sushma Swaraj’s wardrobe. Her make up leaves much to be desired too. She did not look like Arjun Rampal and Ranbir Kapoor’s mother.
I wish the twists and turns to the story were brought by some brilliant political maneuvering instead of only murders. Also Katrina’s character of Indu did not do justice to Draupadi. It started off well but the feistiness  just fizzled out. I did not like Brij Mohan inciting Samar to kill Sooraj. Did Brij Mohan portray Krishna or Shakuni? Samar is kept in dark about his relation with Sooraj. I wish the angle was explored of what if Samar finds about Sooraj after Sooraj’s death.
I loved seeing Bhopal throughout the film. I wish the movie had shown some of the beauty of the city after all Bhopal is a beautiful city.

Raavan

Raavan Hindi MovieRaavan - Dee gives this movie a thumbs up.

The trailers shows a very slick production with melodious music, along with an outstanding cast in terms of Abhishek, Aishwarya, Vikram & Govinda.

FYI there are 2 versions of the movie -- a Hindi and a Tamil version. There is not much difference in script except the hero and villian are interchanged. Abhishek plays Raavan in the Hindi version while Vikram plays the dutiful husband only to swap roles in the Tamil version.

In the past, the winning combination of Mani Ratnam & A R Rehman has given us some magical movie and music moments (Roja, Bombay, Dil Se etc). Abhishek Bachchan added to that winning combination gave us movies like Yuva & Guru. If the past is any indicator, Raavan will please the audiences.

A R Rehman lives up to his reputation and once again gives us a musical score that grows on you the more you listen. I definitely loved 'Beera' & 'Behene De' a lot.

Aishwarya looks ethereal and beautiful. Abhishek looks rugged and strong. Vikram, who is a successful Tamil actor, makes his Hindi film debut, turning in a solid performance.

Based on the trailer, the plot line, the outstanding cast and the associated buzz with this movie, I would give it a thumbs up but would keep my fingers crossed that it meets our heightened expectations.

Kites

Kites Hindi MovieKites - Dee gives this movie a thumbs Up.

Hrithik, the Greek God is back...with his rugged macho looks, chiselled face, superb dancing abilities and fantastic physique. He definitely intrigues and holds your attention in the trailers.

Latin beauty Barbara Mori has become quiet well known even before her first Hindi film, thanks to all the controversy surrounding her sizzling chemistry with Hrithik. The rumors could very well be true, for "there is no smoke without fire"! In this case there is enough "fire" to light up the screen.

Kangana Ranaut makes a special appearance in the movie with a dance performance that matches up to Hrithik's exceptional  abilities. This performance will surely leave a mark.

Kites, shot exclusively in Las Vegas and the harsh terrain of New Mexico, guarantees us a visual feast. The movie is being released in Hindi and English in an effort to reach out to global audiences. Producer Rakesh Roshan has scaled new heights with this film. This father-son combination always deliver something new and exciting for the masses.

Music by Rajesh Roshan is melodious and beautiful. As my friend rightly pointed out, he saves his best for this brother's movies! I loved all the songs... they take time to grow on you, but once it catches on there is no looking back.

This movie for all its delays and controversies, looks well worth the wait & definitely worth a look. As Hrithik's debut song goes 'Kites in the sky, soaring together' ... it could very well be true for this movie. This movie is bound to soar high, hopefully it will rise high enough to meet our heightened expectations.

Badmash Company

badmash company hindi movie Badmaash Company - Dee gives a thumbs up for this movie.

Its official -- Yash Raj Movies has started remaking their own movies. Badmaash Company (my husband thought its a documentary about Goldman Sachs!) seems to be heavily influenced by Bunty Aur Babli only shot extensively in foreign locales. A look at the promos leaves you with a distinct deja vu feeling. But I am still excited to see this movie ....reason? -- Shahid Kapoor! That dude rocks in all aspects - dancing, acting, looks, comedy ...and when teamed with Anushka Sharma the pairing comes across like a breath of fresh air. I loved Anushka in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (no great acting potential but she is easy on the eyes!). Its a total transformation for her, going from the girl next door Taaniji to hot and happening Bulbul.

Set in the 90's, the movie is about 4 middle class youngsters wanting to quickly make it big by --you guessed it -- "doing all the wrong things.. the right way!" -- that is their tag line.

Story, screenplay, dialogue and direction is handled by Parmeet Sethi, who is making his debut with this movie. If the promos are anything to go by, this movie certainly appears to be slick with the potential to be a decent hit.

Pritam always gives foot tapping lively music though I can bet some tunes must be heavily
"inspired" from some South East Asian bands! Loved all the songs especially "Chaska".

Overall would recommend that you go with your own "Badmaash Company" and see this movie!
